In space the sky is black but near the earth a small amount of sunlight is scattered by the atmosphere ,giving rise to the colours seen in the sky .Water droplets, smoke dust etc have an effect and even without these the molecules of the gasses making up the air create colour . In a clear sky one fifth of a % of sunlight gets straight through the rest is scattered by molecules (Rayleigh Scattering)
blue light is scattered about ten times more than red and this makes the sky look blue .
